Hamilton’s Struggle Street: city motels now home for hundreds of families.
1200 people now live in motels across Hamilton, it’s a disgrace, and it’s the direct result of Labour & Greens anti-landlord policies.
Motels are not fit accommodation for families and it’s costing the tax payer over $1 million per day. Building a few more state houses isn’t going to help.
What’s needed is for the government to accept that private accommodation providers, in other words Mum & Dad landlords, fulfil a very important service in providing more than 600,000 rental properties across NZ, versus only 60,000 provided by Kainga Ora (kaingaora.govt.nz/publications/housing-statistics).
The state cannot, nor should it be expected to provide all of the necessary rental housing in New Zealand. The private sector can help, but right now all the government is doing is making it harder and more expensive for private landlords which just continues to push rents up.
From the perspective of a residential property developer, I can honestly say absolutely nothing is being done to make development any easier or more cost effective. Every development we do takes longer and costs more.
Seeing people being forced into motels for long term accommodation when the private sector could be building more rental housing is extremely frustrating.
When are Labour & Greens going to take a step back from their dogged anti-landlord ideology and put the needs of New Zealand’s most vulnerable ahead of their own agenda?
